Best LED HDTV – The Vizio XVT553SV
Ever since their introduction, LED-lit HDTVs have become sought-after items, mostly for their energy efficiency and picture quality superior to conventional LCDs. If there is one LED HDTV you should go after, though, we recommend the Vizio XVT553SV, which combines breathtaking images with a bunch of impressive features.
Design
Design is not exactly the strong suit of Vizio HDTVs and neither is it of the XVT553SV, but it is still better than previous models. The silver speaker bar has been ditched for a black one, which appears more classy, and the edges of the black bezel, which will blend in nicely with any living room scheme and are two inches thinner than usual, by the way, are a bit more rounded, too.
The clicker is an entirely different matter – one of a kind, in fact, with a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard that makes Tweets and Facebook status updates easier. It also has Bluetooth capability so you don’t need line-of-sight for it to work. The on-screen menu is also pretty good, fitted on half the screen with a blue-on-black scheme that’s easy on the eye and accompanied with full explanations for easy navigation.
Screen/Picture Clarity
Unlike most LED HDTVs in the market that are merely edge-lit, the XVT553SV is a full, local-dimming LED HDTV. What that means is that its blacks are very deep, accompanied by excellent shadow detail, and accurate colors that come to life with a punch. Its matte finish also allows it to preserve this high picture quality in brightly lit environments, staving off most reflections.
In terms of video processing, this HDTV comes with various dejudder settings and offers excellent motion resolution, though even with the dejudder engaged, it has a hard time handling 1080p and 24p material – the only problem we’ve seen on this HDTV which isn’t a major concern for most viewers.
Features
Built-in Wi-Fi capability tops the list of this Vizio model’s features, allowing wireless access to content on the internet and networked computers at good enough speeds. Its media streaming options are also among the most advanced, with providers like Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, Vudu video, Pandora and Rhapsody – and in the future, Hulu, while its other online applications are among the most organized.
Nine adjustable picture settings and numerous picture controls are also provided, together with picture-in-picture capability. As for connectivity, it offers 5 HDMI inputs, one component video, a PC input and three USB ports on the side.
True, the Vizio XVT553SV comes at a steep price but this is easily justified by its picture quality and features, which is why it is our “Editor’s Choice” for Best LED HDTV. Need we say more?
