Sony Bravia KDL-32BX300

As TVs become bigger and bigger, the release of the 32-incher Sony Bravia KDL-32BX300 and similar small-size HDTVs barely make it to the news anymore, particularly as these TVs usually lack the cutting-edge features found in the ginormous screens. Still, a huge lower-end market exists and TV-makers continue to create well-performing TV sets like the KDL-32BX300 precisely for consumers in this sector.

Design

Sony does a good job in making a clean, understated style for the KDL-32BX300. Starting with the squared-off panel with matte screen and thick, unadorned glossy black bezels, the simple design includes a moderately thick body, well-hidden speakers, and a low-rise non-swivel stand atop a glossy rectangular base. It may not be a head-turning design, but it is refined enough to blend with typical home décor.

The medium sized remote is an ergonomically designed clicker with well-organized buttons centered around the large thumbpad. The entry-level wand has no backlit keys and cannot control other devices via infrared, but it can control devices connected via HDMI-CEC. The clicker works quite well with the HDTV’s basic menu system that features shortcuts and tool options. The menu also allows users to mark and save inputs and channels as favorites.

Screen/Picture Clarity

The Sony Bravia KDL-32BX300 is undoubtedly a fine entry-level HDTV, with output and performance that are good enough for its price range. For an LCD-based TV, it has above-average color accuracy especially in bright areas, excellent screen uniformity and precise gray-scale rendering. However, it has black levels that are slightly lighter than comparable models; there is a noticeable bluish tint on black and near black areas; and screen clarity degrades fast on off-angle viewing. Luckily, the matte screen does a good job of filtering out reflections and thus makes viewing in bright light conditions tolerable.

While it does not have 3D and other fancy stuff, the KDL-32BX300 does well in the video processing aspect. It surprisingly handled 1080p/24 materials and deinterlaced 1080i sources quite well, with motion resolution that is typical for its 60Hz. refresh rates. Handling of standard-def content is also good – as it resolved every line of DVD test materials without the characteristic jaggies and. The KDL-32BX300 also worked exceptionally well as a PC monitor in its native resolution, with no edge enhancements and overscans like other HDTVs.

Features

As a low-priced basic HDTV, the KDL-32BX300 lacks Internet connectivity and therefore has limited entertainment options. It also does not support USB media playback as the lone USB port is reserved only for service updates. The LCD does supports 1080p/24 full HD compatibility, even if its native resolution is 720p, and offers three power saving modes and the ability to turn-off the screen for sound only output.

Connection options for the KDL-32BX300 are definitely scant and reflect the TV’s status as a basic HDTV: two HDMI slots, one composite video input, two component video inputs, one RF input, one VGA-style PC input, one audio only output, one digital (optical) audio output and one service only USB port.

Made specifically for consumers interested in smaller-sized TVs with affordable price tags, the Sony Bravia KDL-32BX300 is a must-have in every budget buyer’s list. Its features, good aesthetics and above-average picture quality are certainly not bad for an HDTV costing less than $400.

A new tri-chip called AR9004TB – originally developed by Qualcomm-acquired Atheros in conjunction with start-up Wilocity, is expected to significantly change the way HDTV videos are directly streamed from smartphones and tablets. Built on the existing WiFi and Bluetooth 4.0 technologies, the new chip adds support for the 60-gigahertz wireless frequency that is needed for high-speed transmission of high-definition videos.

As watching movies and television shows on-the-go using smartphones and tablets become increasingly popular, consumer electronics manufacturers are always looking for ways to converge and interconnect devices – allowing streaming of media and seamless integration of devices within networks. Currently, these devices use WiFi to stream content to HDTVs, but as more people use wireless transmission, WiFi speed is affected and video quality is haphazard at best. Besides, experts predict that by 2015, WiFi traffic will surpass wired networks and network bandwidth overloading may ensue if current trends continue.

The AR9004TB – the first standards-compliant multi-gigabit wireless chip – is expected to prevent such overloading, as instead of using WiFi’s 2.5-gigahertz and 5.0-gigahertz bands, videos will be exclusively streamed on the 60-gigahertz spectrum to assure faster transmission and consequently, better viewing experiences. The only requirement is for the chip to be installed on smartphones, tablets and televisions for these to work together seamlessly within a network.

HDTV manufacturers must upgrade existing WiFi hardware to support 60-gigahertz transmission, and the possibility of increasing wireless transfers by as much as ten times the current speeds is a good incentive by itself. However, a more compelling rationale for using the Qualcomm chip is the likelihood of being left out in the cold. The development and eventual adoption of the chip is supported by the Wireless Gigabit Alliance, that includes major players like Cisco, Microsoft, AMD, Intel, Samsung and Panasonic. The AR9004TB will be available for sampling beginning this summer.

HDTV sales figures in the US show that Samsung leads the field, with the brand selling the most number of 3DTVs, LED-based LCD TVs, Internet-enabled TVs, and for the first time, plasma TVs. The figures recently released by market research firm NPD Group indicate that the Korean electronics giant leads both in sales and revenue for the first four months of 2011.

Sell-through data for units sold from January to April 2011 gathered by NPD show that Samsung cornered 51.1% of 3DTVs, 48.1% of Smart TVs, and 41.3% of plasmas sold in the US. The latter reflects an improvement of 2.8 percentage points to the previous year’s figure, enabling Samsung to overtake erstwhile leader Panasonic in the plasma category. Overall, the Seoul-based company sold 24.9% of all televisions sold in the country, picking up a 34.7% market share in revenues in the process and making it the undisputed leader in the HDTV market in America.

Samsung’s success was bolstered by the launching of cutting-edge models in the first month of the year – including a broad lineup of plasmas across eight product ranges – during the Consumer Electronics Show 2011 in January. The introduction of innovative features and useful apps – such as the Smart Hub that brings together in one location and streamlines the delivery of diverse streaming content – definitely helped in making more people interested in Samsung television products. Meanwhile, aggressive marketing campaigns such as the decision to bundle two pairs of 3D eyewear free of charge for each 3DTV sold and slashing the price of the active-shutter 3D glasses to below $50 also made favorable impression on consumers.

Through continuing innovation and state-of-the-art research, Samsung has undoubtedly gained consumers’ trust. Buyers – not only from the US but worldwide – rely on the brand to deliver stylish and exciting HDTVs with advanced technologies and impeccable picture quality.

The wealthy set in Europe and the US have another reason to be excited, as the ultra high-end Bang & Olufsen Beovision 4-85 3DTV designed to be the centerpiece of ‘intelligent homes’ is now available exclusively for people who have the floor space for huge screens and who are keen on splurging on really pricey HDTVs. The Beovision 4 3DTV features an impeccably sleek styling, unique motorized stand, superb audio system and stunning picture quality with lifelike colors and sharp details.

This decidedly upscale HDTV is both a visual feast and conversation piece with its single plasma pane encased in high-grade aluminum frame sitting atop an elegantly styled speaker and stand. Turning the TV on is truly a moment to behold, as the motorized stand raises and tilts the screen into the desired viewing position in cadence with the TV’s start-up process; afterwards, the powerful motor lowers the screen to just inches off the floor to make it less obtrusive when the TV is turned off. All these eye-catching movements are done with a flick of a finger using the standard Beo4 remote control shipped with the unit, or the optional Beo6 remote that can be programmed to control a wide array of household devices, such security, ventilation and heating systems.

Powered by a Bang & Olufsen BeoLab 10 center speaker with the patented Acoustic Lens Technology that disperses sound equally on a 180-degree arc, the ginormous 3DTV also boasts of uniformly deep plasma blacks and high definition images with its proprietary Automatic Color Management technology that ensures consistent color accuracy and depth for years to come. The active 3D-powered television set delivers exceptional Full HD images in its native 1080p resolution, and has an excellent anti-reflective coating that minimizes external reflections in brightly lit environments.

The Beovision 4-85 is available in Europe as of May 2011 while availability in the North American market starts in June 2011. The current 85-incher – which includes the TV, stand and speaker – sells at about $85,000 apiece, although there is an option for a wall-mounted unit sans the stand and speaker at a slightly lower price point. However, the price for the 103-inch model expected to be released within the year is yet to be announced.

Samsung 3DTV owners in the US have another reason to stay glued to their TV sets, as spectacular 3D content is now available from the brand’s proprietary streaming content service. Beginning May 2011, 3D-ready LCDs and plasmas can easily access in a single click the Explore 3D application from Samsung SmartHub interface in which three-dimensional high-definition streaming content are available.

Initially, dozens of educational clips, music videos, trailers and complete TV shows from WealthTV are offered and available for free by just signing up to the service via the Internet. The company will offer paid content later this year, as it expands its catalog to include short and full-length movies, documentaries and other compelling 3D content.

With this service, the company hopes to further enhance interest in immersive three-dimensional images and increase its market share in the emerging 3DTV sector. Earlier, Samsung standardized its bundled offerings to include two free 3D eyewear for each 3DTV sold and slashed considerably its price for extra Active Shutter glasses.

For this streaming service, Samsung utilized Active 3D to deliver full definition images powered by Rovi Corporation’s RoxioNow platform with cloud-based metadata. This new arrangement extends the partnership between the leading consumer electronics company and the leading entertainment service provider: Samsung has also licensed the interactive program guide, Advertising Services and DivX technologies used in its consumer electronic devices from Rovi Corporation.

While industry experts are still debating the pros and cons of autostereoscopic technology as a feasible 3D implementation, Nissho Electronics – a relatively unknown manufacturer – has pulled a rug under the industry heavyweights and released BDL5231-3D2R, a 52-inch, glasses-free 3DTV for the Japanese market.

The HDTV used the lenticular technology developed by Dimenco, in what it termed as 2D-plus-depth (2D+Z) stereoscopic video coding format, to deliver three-dimensional, full-HD resolution images without having to don either the pricey Active Shutter glasses or the cheaper polarized variants. Dimenco is originally a splinter group of four engineers from Philips that were at the forefront in the development of the company’s lenticular technology.

The specs of the TV are not much compared to the current crop of HDTVs: 60Hz refresh rate, 8ms. pixel response time, 2000:1 contrast ratio, and 700 nits brightness – these have been rendered obsolete by faster refresh rates that ranges from 90-120Hz, and much higher contrast ratios. Still, the ability of the 3DTV to up-convert 2D materials into images with depth is a breakthrough in 3D technology, and places some pressure on competing consumer electronics manufacturers to fast-track their own no-glasses 3DTVs.

With a ¥1.7 million ($20,820) price tag, the BDL5231-3D2R is definitely not geared for ordinary home users. The manufacturer intends to market the pioneering display with unique 2D depth to businesses that can easily afford the hefty asking price. There is also no news from Nissho on whether said unit would be sold outside Japan.

The recently concluded Society for Information Display (SID 2011) Display Week in Los Angeles brought together a wide array of interesting and really impressive innovations geared for the display industry.
From a new 3D approach that combines passive and active technologies to cutting-edge backlighting that eliminates most of the optical layers that make up most LCD panels, leading manufacturers and trailblazing start-ups competed for attention and support of display industry experts and stakeholders in the week-long event.

Among the most interesting presentation was the 3M backlighting concept that, if pursued, would have a considerable impact on weight, thickness, power consumption, cost and reliability of large displays in the future. The 3M technology entails replacing the numerous light guide filters and diffusers with a single, multi-layered optical film applied to the rear reflector at the back of the LCD panel, with the gap between the layers forming the area where light from the LEDs are mixed. The technique also allows fewer LEDs without the evident headlight effect often noted in today’s LCDs with backlights spaced more than the standard 12mm. between LEDs. Using these innovations results in a 90% reduction of materials, and thus significantly lessens weight, assembly and shipping costs, and heat problems in finished products.

Another exciting discussion in the conference involves autostereoscopic technology – that subset of three-dimensional TV technology that focuses on no-glass 3D viewing. While experts agree that a commercially-viable AS-3DTV is not yet in the immediate horizon, manufacturers offer varying estimate when such products would be available in the market. But in the meantime, the new 3D implementation being pushed by Samsung and RealD that combines the benefits of active shutter technology (providing full HD images to both eyes) and passive technology (using off-the-shelves polarized eyewear) is a great alternative for 3D enthusiasts.

The impressive number of exhibitors and visitors in SID 2011 is a testament to the bright and promising future of consumer electronics and display products. As more people gawked and pondered the state-of-the art-displays, manufacturers, researchers and developers are all the more inspired to innovate and create products that make lives better.

Samsung UN46D6400

The least expensive in Samsung’s 2011 line-up of 3D-ready HDTVs, the UN46D6400 brings great styling, impressive picture quality, and tons of features that are just a step down from those found in the brand’s flagship models. Still, discerning buyers may find it a bit pricey compared to competing brands in the same size range, even if its superb 2D and 3D performance and exceptional image quality would easily beat out most edge-lit HDTVs.

Design

Sporting Samsung’s revamped styling for 2011, the UN46D6400 features a compact, glossy black design with 1.5-inch panel depth and a uniformly narrow bezel that is merely half-inch thick if the transparent outer edge is excluded. Held aloft by a round transparent swivel stalk perched on a matching glossy rectangular stand, the HDTV definitely combines no-nonsense aesthetics with trendy elegance.

Shipped with the UN46D6400 is the standard clicker that is almost similar to last year’s Samsung wand – only the addition of dedicated keys for new features like SmartTV and SocialTV differentiates this newer version. The clicker has 42 backlit keys, and works like a charm with the revamped on-screen menu, but it is still a step-down compared to the QWERTY remote provided with its more expensive linemates. The menu system this year offers a snappier presentation and selection of menu items, with many items accompanied by helpful illustrations and text explanations.

Screen/Picture Clarity

For an edge-lit LED HDTV without local dimming capability, the color accuracy and blacknes of the UN46D6400 are rather exceptional – it easily outclassed many TVs in its category in these aspects. The deep blacks nearly approximates the blackness of plasmas, resulting in vivid images and superb shadow details, although screen throughput is not uniform at times and a bluish wash in dark areas were noticeable during tests. The glossy screen and poor off-angle visibility are also minus points, but these are not considered deal-breakers by most people.

The 3D in the Samsung UN46D6400 is noticeably much better compared to last year’s flagship 3D models; the video processing comes with numerous dejudder and motion settings to produce either smoother video or cinema-like displays. Equipped with 2D-to-3D up-conversion capability, the 3DTV handles both high-def and standard-def sources quite well, rendering superbly realistic images that seems to pop out from the screen.

Features

The Internet-based entertainment fare in the Samsung UN46D6400 are integrated in the Smart Hub interface, which includes top-notch streaming standards like Netflix, Vudu and YouTube, and social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, and even local streaming sources. Samsung ditched Yahoo widgets and some other services, although it has a well-organized apps store that can be tapped into for needed information. The HDTV has optional Skype functionality, but it does not have a web browser unlike the higher end models.

Connectivity selection for the UN46D6400 is impressive enough: four HDMIi inputs, composite/component video inputs, VGA-style PC input, three USB ports, and Ethernet port. The TV has no built-in WiFi but an optional USB dongle is available for wireless connectivity.

Perfect for people looking for great 3DTV that will not break the bank, the Samsung UN46D6400 packs enough features that is sure to make your friends envious. The SmartHub interface alone provides endless hours of quality entertainment, and that is just for starters. This HDTV surely gives a great bang for the buck.

Leading consumer electronics maker Samsung – via its subsidiary Nouvoyance – created a first of its kind prototype HDTV that consumes much less electricity than any TV currently available in the market. The prototype merged the best features of three distinct technologies from legacy LCDs to achieve the breakthrough results that allows dramatic power savings while providing exceptional images: Frame Sequential Color (FSC) displays, RGB local dimming and Nouvoyance’s PenTile technology.

By highly localizing the 2D dimming RGB backlight to make it work with the white subpixels of the PenTile RGBCW array, the developers were able to produce clear and crisp red, green and blue primary hues independently in each FSC zone. In the process, the excursion of colors into surrounding zones – the color bleeding that often annoys viewers that make still and moving images less sharp and realistic – are eliminating and rendered virtually a thing of the past in the emergent product.

But it is in the power consumption that this new invention really excels, as the company reported that the new technology uses about a quarter of the energy consumption of current HDTVs. The awesome power reduction is attributed to the more efficient control of the backlight, as a result of improved color gamut mapping and subpixel rendering. The developers are confident the new technology, known for now as PenTile RGBCW Multiprimary LCD with 2D RGB Local Dimming Backlight, can readily be scaled to bigger panel sizes and finer resolutions.

Samsung exhibited the PenTile RGBCW Multiprimary LCD with 2D RGB Local Dimming Backlight prototype in the Society for Information Display (SID) Display Week 2011 this month in Los Angeles.

Samsung LN32C350

Like its higher-end linemates, the Samsung LN32C350 combines good quality and performance to garner a fair share of the HDTV market, particularly the largely overlooked lower-end sector. Just perfect for first-time HDTV converts or those consumers looking for no-frills HDTVs for their bedrooms, this LCD TV surely packs goodies that are well worth its low price tag.

Design

As in other LCDs, the Samsung LN32C350 sports a thick profile compared to newer LEDs, but it’s definitely slimmer than most of its HDTV predecessors. With a moderately thick glossy bezel on all sides, the lower frame is highlighted by a curved protrusion that delineates the edge of the frame from the exposed speakers below it. The TV stands on a medium-rise non-swivelling stalk anchored on a glossy oval base, giving an overall impression of a wieldy styling, as opposed to the boxy and rigid design of its main competitor.

Samsung shipped with the LN32C350 a stubby wand that is decidedly on the tail-end of its remote control hierarchy. The clicker has no backlighting and it can’t control other devices by either infrared or HDMI, but the buttons are well differentiated enough and the remote works like a charm with the surprisingly well-designed transparent menu system. With its large text, on-screen explanations, shortcuts and easy access to all functions, Samsung’s scaled-down menu is decidedly just right for both newbies and old-timers.

Screen/Picture Clarity

Even as LCDs are largely overshadowed by new LED-based HDTVs, the LN32C350 nonetheless gives a solid performance for an entry-level unit. The black levels, shadow details, and color accuracy of this LCD easily overwhelm its competitors, though there is unmistakable blue tinge in its grayscale and midtones. Performance in brightly illuminated rooms is excellent due to the matte screen, but a noticeable brightness in the corners greatly degrades screen uniformity.

Surprisingly, the 720p-resolution LN32C350 handled 1080p/24 sources properly, though image output for both materials are not as sharp compared to larger TVs. With 60Hz. refresh rates, motion resolution is just right – jaggies and artifacts are seldom seen, if at all. And while PC rendering is good, handling of standard-def content is decidedly sub-par: fine details are filtered out along with noise, resulting in screen images that appear soft.

Features

Like other HDTVs in its price range, the Samsung LN32C350 offers very limited entertainment choices due to the absence of Internet connection: the no-frills moniker means there are no streaming content, widgets or applications whatsoever. Fortunately, the company is generous enough to include one USB port that supports playing of picture and music, but not video playback. It also offers auto power saving options that adjusts power usage depending on the image onscreen, but has no option to switch of the screen for sound only output.

The connectivity selection for the LN32C350 is expectedly spartan: two HDMI inputs, one shared composite and one component video inputs, one RF input, one VGA-style PC input, one digital audio output and the previously described USB port with limited functionality.

The Samsung LN32C350 is definitely a decent choice for a bedroom TV, though it is not without flaws. Combining good picture quality and an inexpensive price tag is indeed a hard act to follow, and it would be very difficult to find something equally cheap and useful.

LG Infinia 55LX9500 LED LCD HDTV

An upgrade of the brand’s flagship LE8500 series, the LG Infinia 55LX9500 shares most of the awesome features of its highly regarded predecessor: great black levels and shadow details, exceptional color accuracy and impressive off-angle fidelity. This new version has with 3D-compatibility, though this new technology is relatively new and hence, still has kinks that LG needs to remedy in future releases.

Design

LG redefines sleekness in the 55LX9500 series, with its slim profile, single pane look and ultra-thin frame that would make people less aware of the TV and more immersed on the pictures on-screen. The head-turning display is complimented by an ice-cube-like transparent swivel stalk on a clear and black stand that together create an illusion of a floating TV screen.

The 55LX9500 comes with both the Wiimote-like Magic Wand motion controller and the standard clicker. The Magic Wand appears to be more useful than in previous models, with its own simplified menu system, a cursor that responds well to the wand’s motions, and buttons that are easy to use by feel. The real remote and menu system, on the other hand, are both functional and intuitive with easily differentiated keys and groupings, plenty of navigation choices and shortcuts, but the clicker lacks infrared control capability and the menu items need some explanations.

Screen/Picture Clarity

Sporting a full array LED backlight with local dimming and 480Hz refresh rates, the LG Infinia 55LX9500 definitely performs well beyond expectations. Images onscreen are punchy and realistic: this HDTV not only recreates the most accurate colors but also offers one of the deepest black levels ever seen in an LCD TV. There is some screen uniformity and blooming problems – but with an impressive off-angle picture quality and shadow rendering that resolved even the most subtle details – these issues are definitely minor.

Since 3D-compatibility distinguishes the Infinia 55LX9500 from its step-down siblings, it is quite expected that it would excel in this arena; unfortunately, the 3D performance is merely so-so, mainly due to the poor black levels which resulted in washed out images. Besides, the HDTV offers no 2D-to-3D conversion capability, resolves 1080p/24 sources incorrectly; and performs poorly under bright light conditions.

The above issues notwithstanding, rendering of high-def programs and 2D materials is exceedingly superb, while handling of standard def sources is also quite commendable. The solid output along with the 55LX9500‘s multiple calibration and motion settings would surely make even jaded HDTV enthusiasts envious.

Features

The Infinia 55LX9500 boasts of its reliable Netcast content providers that includes Netflix and Vudu; Twitter, Picasa, and an updated Yahoo widgets interface. The offering is quite sparse compared to other brands, especially as it lacks Facebook and online music providers like Pandora. One can get the optional 3D glasses for more immersive viewing, while the speakerphone accessory is needed for Skype.

The HDTV comes with four HDMI ports, composite/component/RF inputs, VGA-style inputs, digital audio output, two USB ports, Ethernet port and a proprietary RS-232 media box wireless control port.

The LG Infinia 55LX9500 is decidedly one of the finest HDTVs n the market in terms of design and performance. It might be a tad pricey for most people and its 3D output is less than ideal, but it certainly is perfect for buyers willing to splurge a bit for high picture quality.

LG 60PK550 60-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV

One of the mid-price-range HDTVs released by LG in 2010, the 60PK550 is the biggest sized plasma in the new PK550 series that offers full 1080p compatibility for truly vivid and eye-popping images. Combining sleek and seamless design, superb performance and nice features in a package that comes with a surprisingly affordable price tag, this HDTV is really worth considering when shopping for a new high-def television.

Design

As in other HDTVs in the LG line-up, the 60PK550’s head-turning design immediately draws people’s attention and it’s not difficult to see why. With the slim 2-inch space-saving profile, glossy all-black body with narrow bezel, and trendy swivel and stand all coming together in an exceptionally clean design, this HDTV is sure to attract not only casual glances but admiring looks as well.

The standard unified clicker that comes in the box is easy to use with its distinctive and logically positioned keys and ergonomic design. The backlit remote is CEC-compliant with its SimpLink keys that can be used to control other devices connected via the TV’s HDMI ports. Operation is quite intuitive and effortless with the easy-to-understand menu system that includes basic and advanced HDTV calibration options.

Screen/Picture Clarity

The LG 60PK550 boasts of a powerful video processor that can handle full 1080p sources accurately while doubling the pixel resolution; 600Hz Sub Field Drive for clearer and artifact-free fast action sequences; and a wide array of calibration choices to satisfy even discerning videophiles, The LG 60PK550 resolves standard-def sources quite well, but as it is geared more for HD content, handling of the latter is expectedly richer and more dynamic.

While it suffers slightly when compared to the flagship plasma models in its brood like the Infinia 50PX950, the deep blacks and shadow details of the LG 60PK550 are enough to show realistic images that seems to pop out from the screen, particularly with the awesome contrast ratio that the HDTV offers. Colors are a little subdued and the image a tad darker than others, but this may be due to the ambient light sensor that detects room illumination and adjusts screen brightness accordingly.

The proprietary Skin Glass of LG may reduce internal reflections and provides image depth, but the screen also yielded considerable glare that is quite distracting especially in well-lit rooms. Off-angle viewing is also good in low-light settings.

Features

LG capitalizes on the Intelligent Sensor as one of the selling points of the PK550 series, for good reason: not only does the sensor change the display according to the room brightness, but it lessens power consumption for smart energy efficiency. Another great feature is the excellent sound output from the built-in speakers, though this is not enough to compensate for the lack of Internet connectivity that is already standard offering in other HDTVs in its class.

The LG 60PK550 has also a very limited connectivity with its three HDMI inputs, one USB port for music playing and photo viewing, PC input, component/composite/RF ports, audio output and other standard slots

With superb design, excellent picture quality, decent features, and most importantly, easy-on-the-pocket price tag, the LG 60PK550 is a good choice for people wanting to shift to entry-level plasmas. Others already there may have to look elsewhere for more up-to-date and full-featured HDTVs.

The Mitsubishi L75-A91 75-Inch 1080p LaserVue HDTV

Even as other HDTV makers focus more of their research and development efforts on LCDs and LEDs, Mitsubishi remains committed to projection technology, particularly DLP, for the manufacture of cutting-edge HDTVs geared for high-end home theatre systems. The 4th generation Mitsubishi L75-A91 75-Inch 1080p LaserVue HDTV is the latest of the 3D-ready rear-projection units that certainly raise the bar in HDTV image quality.

Design

Home cinema enthusiasts would surely appreciate the addition of the Mitsubishi L75-A91 LaserVue in the line up of superb yet elegant large-screen HDTVs. Featuring a mammoth screen framed in both sides by a narrow bezel, the top-side features a thicker and slightly protruding frame while the lower side has a thick curved frame that camouflages the control panel and speakers. This LaserVue model truly exudes elegance with its mix of well- defined lines and smooth curves, punctuated by the solid looking removable stand that is softened by light blue lights placed on each side, giving the unit a pleasantly stylish and relaxed ambience.

The Mitsubishi L75-A91 LaserVue is shipped with the standard Mitsubishi universal remote controller which can operate HDMI devices attached to the television. With a wide form factor, the remote features easy to distinguish keys and groupings that make operation and navigation of the straightforward menu system quite hassle-free.

Screen/Picture Clarity

This Mitsubishi L75-A91 harnesses the latest advances in LaserVue technology which now uses the purest laser light to deliver rich picture quality that doubles the color and complexity offered by current flat panel HDTVs. Touted as the largest DLP display with the least electricity consumption, the Mitsubishi L75-A91 provides optimized cinema-like displays with stunning picture quality and unmatched clarity that rivals those of digital movie theatres.

The L75-A91 handles 1080p/24 sources exceptionally well with its Variable Smooth 120 Film Motion feature, while up-converting standard def sources is a breeze with the Plush1080p 5G 12-Bit video processor. The LaserVue also renders 3D images superbly, and with the use of appropriate 3D accessories, gives truly immersive viewing experiences. However, accessories needed for 3D viewing are purchased separately in the company released 3D Starter Pack.

Features

Aside from the impressive Cinema Color mode and lowest-ever power consumption for DLP HDTVs, the Mitsubishi L75-A91 LaserVue offers an irresistible array of features that would make movie and video enthusiasts drool: StreamTV Internet Media that allows access to the VUDU HD movie rental site, Flickr, Picasa and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. This unit also features an integrated HDTV tuner that picks up over-the-air HDTV broadcasts as well as HDTV feeds from unscrambled cable systems.

The L75-A91 LaserVue is generously fitted with four HDMI connectors with Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) capabilities; rf, component and composite jacks; Ethernet port; audio output jacks; and two USB ports (one with accessory power) that is useful for viewing JPEG files and playing MP3 music. The unit offers Easy Connect function that automatically identifies and removes connected/disconnected devices.

With a consistent throughput of vividly spectacular images, DLP is still the best choice for really great home cinema systems, albeit an expensive one. But for true cinemaphiles who are willing to splurge a bit, the Mitsubishi L75-A91 75-Inch 1080p LaserVue HDTV should be at the top of their shopping list.

The 3d LG Infinia 50PX950

One of the stand-outs in the recent spate of 3D HDTV releases, the LG Infinia 50PX950 plasma promises great picture clarity with its deep blacks, accurate colours and excellent 3D rendering in an exceptionally sleek design that would surely make people notice.

Design

With a narrow and flushed blue bezel framing the single-pane display, the LG Infinia 50PX950 gives a stunningly clean and sleek look that never fails to attract attention. The moderate panel thickness, transparent revolving stalk and a glass-topped rectangular stand add elegant touches that make this HDTV superbly appealing and perfect for modern home interiors.

Like the other top-of-the-line releases from LG, the Infinia 50PX950 comes with the Magic Wand remote that mimics Nintendo’s Wiimote controller, in addition to the standard remote controller. The motion-sensitive wand fits easily in the hand and has a few buttons that allows users to control the HDTV on-screen menus by hand gestures. But if one finds the novel clicker no longer amusing, the standard multi-button remote with rubberized and friendly keys works just fine. The remote may lack the ability to control other infrared devices, but it sure has distinctive buttons that enable effortless navigation of the basic and advanced menus and functions.

Screen/Picture Clarity

The Infinia 50PX950 adds 3D and THX display capabilities to the former flagship PK950 series, but THX in both 3D and 2D modes are nonadjustable while the other four 3D modes and the rest of the 2D modes have various advanced picture adjustment options. The HDTV has an ambient light sensor that automatically adjusts brightness on the non-THX modes, and LG’s Picture Wizard is handy for guiding the uninitiated into the intricacies of basic display adjustments.

With deep-enough blacks and accurate colour response out-of-the-box particularly for the THX mode, the Infinia 50PX950 certainly gives other plasmas a run for their money. Tweaking the brightness and gamma settings makes the picture even better, with uniform image quality and off-angle clarity that match the output of top competing brands. The HDTV processes standard and high definition (1080p/24) sources quite well, and most importantly, delivers on its three-dimensional promise as it renders 3D better than all other plasmas. Of course, the images do come alive with the help of the 3D glasses which, unfortunately, are optional and an added expense.

Features

The PX950 series comes with an array of features: streaming media from Netflix, Youtube and Vudu; Internet apps such as Twitter, Picasa and Flickr; and a host of useful Yahoo widgets and games, though it lacks Facebook and other major streaming-content providers like Amazon. Internet connection is via Ethernet or the optional WiFi USB dongle, while various devices can be connected through the four HDMI ports, two USB ports, and a host of standard connections and inputs. The optional LG Wireless Media Box offers a proprietary wireless HDMI access for even greater flexibility and convenience.

The Infinia 50PX950 offers white/colour washes and a pixel orbiter to combat image burn-in, on-screen manual, and energy saving modes, including a “screen off” option for listening only to sounds.

With an splendid design, impressive picture quality and a treasure-trove of cutting-edge features, the LG Infinia 50PX950 definitely deserves its place as the LG’s new flagship HDTV, replacing its equally impressive predecessors in the PK950 series.

Best Plasma HDTV – The LG Infinia 60PK950

LCD HDTVs continue to improve each year, but to date, Plasma televisions deliver the best picture quality. The one offered by the LG Infinia 60PK950 is particularly exceptional and in our opinion, the best among non-3D Plasma HDTVs so far.

Design

The LG 60PK950 may not be the slimmest Plasma around but at a depth of 2.1 inches, it’s impressive enough. Combine that with the single sheet of glass design, the narrow transparent edges and a glass swiveling stalk (similar to Samsung models) and you have an HDTV which exudes elegance and sophistication.

The PK950 series comes with a thin, secondary clicker called a ‘Magic Wand’, which, though unable to make broomsticks fly, allows you to move the cursor around on a simple on-screen menu, just like you can do with the Wiimote. If you want more options, you can always access the standard menu with the main remote, that is also easy to use with rubberized keys.

Screen/Picture Clarity

One of the best features of the 60PK950 is the TrueBlack filter, which allows it to exhibit blacks richer than those of previous company models and preserve these even in well-lit environments. Color accuracy is also very good, especially in bright scenes, and the color saturation isn’t lacking, either.

The 60PK950 scored lower than some 240Hz LCDs and high-end 3D-compatible Plasmas on motion tests, but it still scored well enough and the difference is something viewers won’t notice. It can also handle 1080p and 24p sources correctly unlike the PK750.

Features

While lacking 3D capability and built-in WiFi, this HDTV is still rich in cool features. It offers video streaming from Netflix, Vudu and YouTube, DLNA compliance, and Yahoo widgets, along with Skype capability, ten built-in custom games, a world clock and a calendar.

Like other LG models, it offers no shortage of adjustable picture controls and picture modes, even including not just one but two THX modes – THX Bright Room and THX Cinema. There’s an ambient light sensor and power-saver mode, too, and four HDMI inputs, two component video inputs, a PC input and two USB ports for the bulk of the connectivity options.

For all these reasons, the LG Infinia 60PK950 is our “Editor’s Choice” for Best Plasma HDTV, among the 2D ranks, at least. For certain, it is LG’s best so far, and we recommend it for those who are after the stunning picture quality of Plasmas, something you don’t need glasses to see.
